Virat Kohli salutes KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal as they walk off the field in Perth

Watch: Virat Kohli took to the field at the end of a successful day for India in Perth, saluting Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul as the pair walked off the field with an unbeaten stand of 172 to their names.

Jaiswal and Rahul gave India a lead of 218 by the end of day two of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India bowled Australia out for 104 in the morning session of play, securing a first-innings lead of 46. In contrast to the first innings where India were bowled out for 150, Jaiswal falling for a duck, the openers put on a strong display across the next two sessions.

By the end of the day, they were closing in on the all-time record for an India opening partnership in men's Tests in Australia, and finished just 14 runs short of Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth's record. Jaiswal will begin day three closing in on a fourth Test century, having entered the 90s in the final over of the day.

Despite having not featured in proceedings since India were fielding in the morning session, Kohli descended down the stairs from the dressing rooms at the Optus Stadium when the umpires signalled stumps. Wearing his batting gloves and pads and carrying his bat, he crossed over the boundary rope and on to the outfield as the players walked off. He proceeded to salute Rahul and Jaiswal as they walked towards the edge of the field, raising his bat and clapping in their direction. He then put his hand to his forehead in a salute as they neared him.

Kohli will likely feature heavily in tomorrow's proceedings, slated to come in at No.4. He was out for five in India's first innings, and comes into the series after a run of low scores in India's series loss to New Zealand.
