Watch: Virat Kohli put down a simple slip catch against Australia, even as his teammates celebrated around him – unaware that the India star had dropped it.

India chose to bat first in Perth, but the decision quickly backfired as the lost Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal early on. Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel fell soon after to leave them reeling at 73-6. A 48-run partnership between Rishabh Pant and debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy then helped India post 150, as they were bowled out in two sessions.

Jasprit Bumrah then led India's reply with the ball, trapping Nathan McSweeney lbw in the third over of the innings. New batter Marnus Labuschagne survived his first delivery, but off the second, Bumrah managed to draw the outside edge.

The ball flew through at a nice height to second slip, where Virat Kohli was positioned. He collected the ball with two hands, appearing to pouch it safely. The fielders either side of him, KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal, began running off in celebration, as did the rest of the team.

However, barely a second later, Kohli, who had gone down on the turf, threw the ball back to the bowler, visibly frustrated and shaking his head to indicate the catch had not been taken. Replays then showed that he had indeed gotten two hands to the ball, but ended up dropping it while attempting to regain his balance.
