Virat Kohli returns to the pavilion after falling for five on day one of the Perth Test between Australia and India

Watch: Virat Kohli was dismissed for yet another low score after edging a rising short ball to slip during the opening day (November 22) of the Perth Test between Australia and India.

India didn’t have the likeliest of starts after Jasprit Bumrah opted to bat first in the series opener. Mitchell Starc drew the first blood for Australia, removing Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck. Josh Hazlewood inflicted further damage by ending Devdutt Padikkal’s painstaking 23-ball staywithout allowing him to open the account. Then he snared the big wicket of Kohli to reduce India to 32 for three.

Hazlewood, bowling the 17th over, landed the second delivery short of length outside off. Kohli, batting outside his crease, was taken by surprise as the ball climbed onto him. He fended at it, edging it to Usman Khawaja at first slip.

It can be argued whether the ball could have been left on the length as Kohli’s tendency to lunge forward had resulted in similar dismissals earlier. The batter returned to the pavilion for a 12-ball five.

Kohli’s form has been under heavy scrutiny lately. In his last 10 innings during India’s preceding series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, Kohli has only reached fifty once.

India reached Lunch on Day One in a spot of bother, at 51-4.
