Watch: India captain Rohit Sharma was heard scolding his teammate and opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal on day one of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.
Debutant Sam Konstas stole the show on the first morning of the Test with a quickfire fifty that broke several records after Australia had won the toss and elected to bat first. Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne scored half-centuries as well and so did Steve Smith as India had to put in a tough shift on the field.
The visitors had replaced Shubman Gill with Washington Sundar in the XI, providing them an extra spin-bowling option alongside Ravindra Jadeja. During one of Jadeja's overs, Yashasvi Jaiswal was standing at silly point when Smith was on strike. As Smith defended a length ball towards the off-side, Jaiswal jumped up in anticipation of an aggressive stroke, drawing the ire of his captain.
Rohit: "Are you playing gully cricket?"
Rohit immediately scolded Jaiswal, shouting in Hindi: "Arre Jaisu! Gully cricket khel raha hai kya? (Jaisu [Jaiswal]! Are you playing gully cricket?!)".
That was not the end of it. Rohit specified that he wanted Jaiswal to crouch properly while fielding at silly point soon after. "Neeche baith ke reh. Jab tak ball khelega nahi, uthne ka nahi. Neeche baith ke reh (Keep crouching. Don't get up till he plays the ball. Keep crouching)," Rohit was heard saying on the stump mic.
Jadeja was the first bowler to provide a breakthrough for India in the morning session when he got rid of the dangerous Konstas, trapping him lbw. After two good partnerships, India bounced back as Australia slipped from 237-2 to 246-5. At the time of writing, the hosts are 249-5 with Smith and Alex Carey on the crease.
