India were in a spot of bother early on the first morning after choosing to bat first as they lost Yashasvi Jaiswal in the third over, before Devdutt Padikkal departed for a 23-ball duck. Virat Kohli was undone by Josh Hazlewood, before KL Rahul was controversially given out after Australia reviewed the on-field call of not out.
Rishabh Pant came to the crease at the fall of Kohli's wicket, with the score 32-3 in 16.2 overs. However, India soon slipped to 59-5 and then 73-6 after Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar were dismissed.

Nitish Kumar Reddy then joined Pant, and the pair began to rebuild the innings. They had managed to put on 35 runs, when Pant took on Cummins in unconventional fashion.
Facing a full delivery just outside off stump, instead of pushing it on the off side, Pant swivelled and opted to loft it, behind square on the leg side, despite the presence of fielders on the boundary. He lost his balance after playing the shot, landing up on the turf even as the ball went sailing over the boundary in an extraordinary display of skill and audacity.
Pant was eventually dismissed for 37, and India bowled out for 150 by the end of the second session.
