Mitchell Starc dismisses Yashasvi Jaiswal

Facing the first ball, the youngster was left with no room to breathe and little time to bring his bat down as the pink ball swung back in sharply to hit his pad in front of the leg stump.

It’s often said that sport is a great leveller. Jaiswal, who had sledged Starc with an ‘it’s coming too slow’ remark during his marathon innings of 161 (297) at the Optus Stadium in Perth in the first Test, was made to eat his words in Adelaide. Starc had also gotten him out in the first innings of that match.

The ruthlessness of the dismissal also reminded of a certain Prithvi Shaw whose career was never the same after facing Starc in Adelaide four years ago. With the pink ball in hand, Starc exposed the massive gap between the bat and pad to send Shaw back to the pavillion on a silver duck in the second ball of the Test.

Like Jaiswal, England’s Rory Burns has also been a victim of Starc’s devilish swing on the first ball of an anticipated Test match. His leg stump got taken out by the Australian pace veteran on the first ball of the Ashes series between Australia and England at the Gabba in December, 2021.
