Marnus Labuschagne battled it out for 52 deliveries in Perth today (November 22), making two runs during the first Test against India - the slowest any Australia player has batted in Test history.
Labuschagne was given an early reprieve after Virat Kohli spilt onto an easy catch at slips. The No.3 was yet to get off the mark at that point and had faced only two deliveries.
Labuschagne went on to face 50 more balls in his knock before being sized up by Mohammed Siraj, who trapped him in front of the wicket. On the last ball of the 21st over, Siraj sent down a full ball that pitched outside the off stump. Labuschagne was unable to play it away as it crashed onto his pad. The No.3 departed for two, bringing skipper Pat Cummins to the crease as Australia fell to 47-6.
Labuschagne’s vigil, made at a strike rate of 3.84, was the slowest an Australia player has batted in Test cricket history. Among all Australia batters who have faced at least 50 balls in an innings, the previous record belonged to Steven O’Keefe, who batted 98 balls for four runs at a strike rate of 4.08 against Sri Lanka in 2016. They are the only two batters to play out at least 50 balls and strike below five in an innings.

It was also the fewest runs Labuschagne has ever scored in a Test innings after facing 50 deliveries. His previous lowest had been five runs, which he made at The Oval last year.
Overall, Labuschagne has made the 12th fewest runs after facing 50 balls in Test cricket. Four batters - Richard Ellison, Geoff Allott, Peter Such and James Anderson - played 50 balls without scoring a run.
Australia were soon reduced to 59-7 after India had been bowled out for 150, their lowest first innings total in Australia, within two sessions. The hosts finished day one on 67-7, still trailing by 83 runs.
