Sam Konstas put on a breathtaking display of batting on debut at the MCG, and Ben Curran at Bulawayo, in their respective Boxing Day Test matches.
Konstas came in to replace Nathan McSweeney at the top of the order for Australia as the hosts looked for some impetus early on in their batting against a Jasprit Bumrah-led bowling attack. Konstas provided just that, putting the Indian attack off their lines and lengths by bringing out ramps and slogs in a never-seen-before assault against the new ball.
Konstas started tentatively, reaching five off his first 21 balls before he started connecting. The 19-year-old on Test debut took 14 runs off a Bumrah over by ramping him thrice behind the wicket, before taking 18 off the world No.1 in his next.
The debutant reached his fifty off just 51 balls before perishing to the left-arm spin of Ravindra Jadeja for 60 off 65, his strike rate reading 92.30. This has now become the quickest 50-plus score recorded by an Australian men's Test opener on debut, going past Wayne Phillips, who made 159 off 246 at a rate of 64.63 in 1983 against Pakistan.
Overall, Konstas' effort has taken him to fifth on the all-time list of quickest fifty-plus scores by openers on men's Test debuts, moving past India's Prithvi Shaw, who had recorded a 154-ball 134 against the West Indies in 2018. The list is headed by Shikhar Dhawan, who made an astonishing 187 off just 174 balls on debut against Australia in 2013. Only two other openers have made 50-plus scores at run-a-ball on their Test debuts - Lou Vincent and Dimuth Karunaratne.
Later in the day against Afghanistan, Ben Curran hit 68 in 74 balls. Curran went past Shaw as well but could not outdo Konstas, and finished sixth on the list. However, of the five entries above Curran, only Dhawan had a bigger score.
