Ricky Ponting has criticised Sam Konstas for his run-in with India skipper Jasprit Bumrah on the last over of lunch on day one of the SCG Test.

India had been dismissed for 185 in the first innings but ended with a late advantage as they sent back left-hander Khawaja on the last ball of the day. The dismissal, however, was not without some drama, with Konstas, whose fiery debut has made the world sit up and notice, getting involved as well.

Khawaja held up play while fixing his gloves, seemingly to ensure Bumrah’s second over was the last of the day. The quick did not take too kindly to the hold-up, voicing his opinion to either the umpire or the striker. Konstas, at the other end, thrust himself into the situation, appearing to tell Bumrah to go back to his bowling mark.

Bumrah immediately walked up to the 19-year-old, seemingly uttering “What is your problem?” before the umpires intervened. Two balls later, Bumrah had Khawaja caught at slip, where KL Rahul held onto a low catch. Bumrah turned towards Konstas and walked towards him with a stare after he got the wicket, who found himself surrounded by the animated Indian fielders.

Ponting has criticised Konstas for getting involved between the two senior players, saying his words would have fired the Indian team up and the last player the hosts wanted to upset was Bumrah, in the midst of a stellar series. Speaking on Channel 7, he said: “I never like playing around with a game of cricket like that. It has a way of coming back and biting you time after time. They tried their best to take time out of the game. And this is what has happened as a result.

"One guy you don't want to upset is Jasprit Bumrah. The way he's bowled and the fact he has got Khawaja out five times in the series. I didn't like Konstas getting involved. That was not his battle to fight. It was between Khawaja and Bumrah. For the young man there, I hope that there was some talking to from the Australian dressing room last night because he should have stayed out of that, let his senior player handle the last couple of balls."

Former all-rounder Tom Moody was also not impressed with the actions, tweeting: “Sam Konstas has much to learn. I hope the dressing room is offering that guidance without suppressing his confidence and youthful enthusiasm."

Konstas was dismissed on Saturday for 23 in 38 deliveries, falling to Mohammed Siraj while driving a full-length delivery.
