Jasprit Bumrah picked up his 32nd wicket on the ongoing tour of Australia when he dismissed Marnus Labuschagne at the SCG today (January 4).
Bumrah had an all-time great Test year in 2024, scalping 71 wickets at an average of 14.9 in 13 matches. He picked up five five-wicket hauls at a strike rate of 30.1 and began the new year with a wicket in his first spell as well. On day one of the SCG Test, Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja on the last ball and came with the wicket of Labuschagne the following day.
It took his tally to 32 wickets in the series, the most by any India bowler away from home in a bilateral Test tour. He overtook Bishan Singh Bedi’s record, who had taken 31 Test wickets on the 1977/78 tour Down Under.
Currently, Bumrah, who is also leading the Indian team in the fifth match following Rohit Sharma’s controversial decision to “opt out”, averages 12.81 in Australia, the highest ever among all India bowlers who have taken 25 wickets away from home in a single series.
This is also the third time that Bumrah has taken more than 20 wickets in an away series—after the 2021 tour of England, when he took 23 wickets, and the 2018/19 series against Australia when he took 21.
