Yashasvi Jaiswal broke Brendon McCullum's record for the most Test sixes hit by a single player in a calendar year today (November 23), as he batted India ahead of the game in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Perth.
Having bowled Australia out for 104 in the morning session of day two in Perth, Jaiswal set about building a solid partnership with KL Rahul to build India's lead. India were bowled out for 150 on day one, with Jaiswal registering an eight-ball duck. However, he passed 50 in the evening session of the day, taking 123 balls to do so.
After reaching his half-century, Jaiswal pushed on alongside Rahul and the partnership entered three figures. Having seemingly sledged Mitchell Starc for bowling too slowly earlier in the day, Jaiswal utilised the late eighties mph speed from the left-armer, flicking him over deep-backward square for a six. That boundary saw the 22-year-old equal a decade old record held by McCullum, for the most sixes hit in Tests in a calendar year.
Later in the evening session, Pat Cummins turned to spin to give his trio of pacers a break and see if a change in pace could force a breakthrough in the dominant partnership. Jaiswal, however - now nearing his century - spied an opportunity.
He danced down the wicket and lofted a flighted ball from Nathan Lyon down the ground and over long on for a huge six. That was his 34th six since the beginning of the year, meaning he now holds the record for the most Test sixes in a calendar year outright.
Jaiswal is playing his 12th Test of 2024 in Perth, and is near the end of a stellar year in Test cricket. Having made his debut in 2023, he's so far scored two Test centuries in 2024, both of them doubles, coming against England in Visakhapatnam and Rajkot. He's also made eight half-centuries and averages 57.47 with a rapid strike rate of 73.10.
