Following his century in Perth, Yashasvi Jaiswal has moved a step closer to breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most Test runs scored in a calendar year by an India player.
Jaiswal scored 161 in India's second innings of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Perth. The innings was the fourth of his career, his third Test century since the beginning of the year, and the first he did not convert into a double. His two previous centuries this year both came against England, scoring 209 in Visakhapatnam and 214* in Rajkot.
His innings against Australia was hailed by stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah as his best in the post-match press conference. After India were bowled out for 150 on day one, they faced an uphill battle to stay in the match. But a five-for from Bumrah ensured the tourists retained a first-innings lead before Jaiswal's century, as well as Virat Kohli's from No.4, put them well out of Australia's reach.
Jaiswal has now scored 1,280 Test runs across 12 Test matches this year. He has reached fifty 10 times out of 23 and averages 58.18 since the beginning of the year. With three Test matches left in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy before the New Year, assuming Jaiswal remains injury free, he has a realistic possibility of breaking Tendulkar's record for the most Test runs scored in a year by an India batter [1,561].
Although he is still 282 runs off the record, Jaiswal has been scoring his runs at an average of 106 per Test this year. If he were to continue that average for the next three Tests, he would surpass Tendulkar's record.
Jaiswal currently sits in 10th place on the list of India players. The only one of his teammates above him in the table is Kohli [1,322 runs in 2018]. Even if Jaiswal did surpass Tendulkar's record, he is unlikely to break the all-time list of players from any nation. That record is held by Mohammad Yousuf, who scored 1,788 runs in 11 Test matches in 2006. Tendulkar's India record sits in sixth place on that list, below Viv Richards [1,710 in 1976], Joe Root [1,708 in 2021], Graeme Smith [1,656 in 2008] and Michael Clarke [1,595 in 2012].
