Steve Smith scored a record 15th century against India across formats during day two of the Brisbane Test between Australia and India.
Smith brought up his first century after 25 innings, having scored the last one at Lord’s during last year’s Ashes. It was not one of his fluent innings as he played and missed several deliveries, surviving a couple of close lbw calls.
However, he managed to stick through the difficult phase and kept the scoreboard ticking to bring up his 50 off 128 balls. One notable change that was visible in this innings was a change of stance: Smith resorted to his back and across trigger movement from his initial days to keep the India bowlers at bay. He went to tea on 65 and accelerated from thereon, adding 31 runs off 14 deliveries in the third session to move into the 80s before reaching the three-figure mark off 185 balls in the 82nd over of Australia's innings.
Smith now has 33 Test hundreds, the second most by an Australian cricketer. Former captain Ricky Ponting heads the prestigious club with 41 to his name, while Steve Waugh has 32 and Matthew Hayden 30.
Apart from Smith, Travis Head, India’s familiar foe, shone once more with a 160-ball 152. For the visitors, Jasprit Bumrah put up a one-man show yet again, picking up a five-wicket haul.
