After his 10 wickets at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Scott Boland now has the best bowling average in men’s Test cricket since the First World War.
Boland had taken 4-31 in the first innings to help Australia bowl out India for 185 at the SCG. He did even better in the second innings, taking 6-45 to skittle the tourists for 157. The second-innings figures were Boland’s second Test five-for, after his famous 4-1-7-6 against England on debut, at Sydney in 2021-22.
This was also Boland’s first ten-wicket haul in Test cricket. His match figures, 10-76, are the fourth-best at the venue, after Charlie Turner’s 12-87 in 1888-89, Imran Khan’s 12-165 in 1976-77, and Fred Spofforth’s 11-117 in 1882-83. The 76 were also the fewest runs anyone had conceded to take a ten-wicket haul at the venue.
Boland’s performance took his career haul to 56 Test wickets at 17.66, the eighth-best average in history and the best since the First World War with a 50-wicket cut-off.
Among Australians with 50 wickets, only Turner has a better average (16.53 for his 101 wickets), though mention must be made of Turner’s new-ball partner JJ Ferris (48 at 14.25 for Australia, 13 at 7.00 for England).
