Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test with a side strain.
Two uncapped fast bowlers, Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett, have been added to the squad, though Scott Boland is the most likely beneficiary of Hazlewood’s misfortune.
Hazlewood’s injury is a significant blow for Australia. He has an excellent pink-ball record, averaging 18.86 in day/night Tests, and he was their standout bowler in the hosts’ defeat in the Perth Test, claiming four wickets in the first innings and bowling a miserly spell in the second even as India built a big lead.
Boland is a capable back-up however, averaging 20.34 with the ball after a stellar start to his Test career. He played the last of his 10 Tests thus far at Headingley in the 2023 Ashes.
Abbott, 32 years old, has been an occasional presence in Australia’s white-ball XIs over the past decade, winning 46 limited-overs caps since his 2014 debut. The New South Welshman has taken 261 first-class wickets at a shade over 30. Doggett, 30, averages 28.63 with the ball in first-class cricket, and is yet to play for Australia in any format. He recently registered figures of 6-15 for Australia A against India A at Mackay. Each has been in Test squads before without earning a cap.
Hazlewood is an addition to a lengthy Australia injury list. All-rounder Cameron Green was ruled out of the home summer after opting to undergo surgery to address a series of back stress fractures, while Mitchell Marsh is an injury doubt for the second Test after experiencing soreness while bowling at Perth. Another uncapped player, all-rounder Beau Webster, has been added to the squad as cover, meaning Australia’s squad for the second Test includes 15 players, a bumper number for a home Test.
The second Australia-India Test takes place at Adelaide Oval and starts on Friday, December 6.
Australia squad for second India Test: Steve Smith, Pat Cummins (c), Alex Carey (wk), Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland, Mitch Marsh, Mitchell Starc, Sean Abbott, Brendan Doggett, Beau Webster.
