Isa Guha apologises for comments on Jasprit Bumrah

Ahead of the third day’s play at Brisbane, Isa Guha issued an on-air apology on comments she made about Jasprit Bumrah on the previous day's coverage.

Rain had restricted the first day’s play at the ongoing Gabba Test to 13.2 overs, during which Australia had reached 28-0. On the second morning, however, Bumrah removed both openers early to reduce Australia to 38-2.

On air, Brett Lee noted, “Bumrah, today: five overs, two for four, that’s the tone, and that’s what you want from the ex-skipper.”

“Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he?” responded Guha. “Most valuable primate, Jasprit Bumrah,” before going on to praise the fast bowler.

The use of the word “primate” drew criticism, mostly from social media, where Guha, of Indian heritage like Bumrah, was accused by some users of racism. Ahead of the third day’s play, Guha issued an apology on air.

“Yesterday in commentary I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways,” she said. “Firstly, I’d like to apologise for any offence caused. I set myself really high standards when it comes to empathy and respect for others.

“If you listen to the full transcript, I only meant the highest praise for one of India’s greatest players and someone I admire greatly as well. I am an advocate for equality and is someone who has spent their career thinking about inclusion and understanding in the game. I am trying to frame the enormity of his achievements and I’ve chosen the wrong word. For that I’m deeply sorry.

“As someone of South Asian heritage I hope people would recognise that there was no other intention or malice there. I hope it hasn’t overshadowed what has been a great Test match so far. And I look forward to seeing how it progresses. Once again, I am really, really sorry.”

Fellow commentator Ravi Shastri praised Guha. “Brave woman: to do it on live television and apologise, takes some steel. As far as I’m concerned, game over. Sometimes when you have the mic in hand, things can happen. But to own up, put your hand up and say ‘I'm sorry’ takes courage. She has done it, let’s move on.”

Adam Gilchrist, too, voiced “full support” towards Guha, reminding the viewers of her South Asian heritage and her "professionalism integrity, and genuine level of compassion and support towards anyone."
