India are on the brink of a historic victory in Perth, with the potential to achieve their largest-ever Test win by runs outside Asia.
After being bowled out for just 150 in the first innings, India managed to secure a 46-run lead, thanks to stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah’s impressive five-wicket haul. The second innings showcased India's resolve, as they batted for 134.3 overs to declare at 487-6.
The batting effort was highlighted by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s outstanding knock - his fourth score of 150-plus in Tests - alongside valuable contributions from the returning KL Rahul and Virat Kohli, who ended his 16-month wait for a Test century.
At the close of day three, Australia found themselves struggling at 12-3, facing a daunting target of 522 runs. By lunch on day four, they were 104-5, with early dismissals of Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith leaving them trailing by 430 runs and on the verge of handing India their biggest Test victory (by rus) outside Asia.
India have won by an innings five times outside Asia, the biggest of which has been by an innings and 141 runs, which they recorded last year against the West Indies.
On instances when they have batted twice, India’s biggest Test win has been by 318 runs, also against the West Indies in 2019. If India are to break that record in Perth, they will need to dismiss Australia for 214 runs or fewer.
Only four times in their Test history have India won a Test match outside Asia by more than 250 runs, and only twice in the last 38 years. India's biggest Test victory in Australia is by an innings and 2 runs, which came 46 years back, in 1978. When they have batted twice, India's biggest victory in Australia has been by 222 runs, coming in Melbourne in 1977.
