India secured a historic victory in Perth, almost achieving their largest-ever Test win by runs outside Asia.
After being bowled out for just 150 in the first innings, India managed to secure a 46-run lead, thanks to stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah’s impressive five-wicket haul. The second innings showcased India's resolve, as they batted for 134.3 overs to declare at 487-6.
The batting effort was highlighted by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s outstanding knock - his fourth score of 150-plus in Tests - alongside valuable contributions from the returning KL Rahul and Virat Kohli, who ended his 16-month wait for a Test century.
At the close of day three, Australia found themselves struggling at 12-3, facing a daunting target of 522 runs. They eventually folded for 238, 295 runs short of the target.
India have won by an innings five times outside Asia, the biggest of which has been by an innings and 141 runs, which they recorded last year against the West Indies.
On instances when they have batted twice, India’s biggest Test win has been by 318 runs, also against the West Indies in 2019. If India were to break that record in Perth, they had to dismiss Australia for 214 runs or fewer. The 295-run victory now stands second on the list of India's biggest Test victories outside Asia (excluding innings victories).
Only four times in their Test history have India won a Test match outside Asia by more than 250 runs, and only twice in the last 38 years. India's biggest Test victory in Australia is by an innings and 2 runs, which came 46 years back, in 1978. The Perth victory is now their biggest victory in Australia when they have batted twice, overtaking the 222-run win in Melbourne in 1977.
