The India team has denied an Australian media outlet's claim that Ravindra Jadeja refused to answer press conference questions in English, ahead of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.
On Saturday, Jadeja addressed media at the MCG, after which Australian media outlet 7News put out a story claiming that the all-rounder had refused to answer questions in English.
The report read: "India’s Ravindra Jadeja faced reporters but the Australian media were bemused and confused when the star allrounder refused to answer questions in English."
"It was obviously an annoying situation for the journalists who made the effort to turn up, and comes just days after Indian legend Virat Kohli’s blow-up at Melbourne Airport."
However, as confirmed to Wisden.com, the India team denied the claim that Jadeja categorically "refused" to answer questions in English.
As per the press conference footage, Jadeja answered all his questions in Hindi, since all questions directed to him were in Hindi.
It is understood that Jadeja arrived slightly later than expected for the press conference, and the media team couldn't accommodate all questions as he had to head to the team bus. However, he did speak to the media for close to nine minutes.
The report also claims that "India’s media team said the conference was for 'travelling Indian media only', even though Australian media was invited".
However, Wisden.com understands that the interaction was originally planned for Indian media only, but the team had no issues when the Australian media became aware and attended. The Australia team, too, have kept media interactions exclusively for Australian media in the past.
Travelling India reporters in Australia have called out 7News for their reporting, stating that even Harshit Rana had spoken in Hindi throughout the press conference in Perth on his debut.
