Australia A shot out India A for 107 in 47.4 overs in the first unofficial “Test match” at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
South Australian fast bowler Brendan Doggett’s career-best haul of 6-15 helped Australia A demolish India A for 107 in the first “Test” of the two-match series.
India A got off to a horror start after Nathan McSweeney won the toss and opted to field. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad lasted one ball, while his opening partner and vice-captain Abhimanyu Easwaran, part of the squad that will play the Test series in the same country from next month, made seven. Both wickets went to Doggett’s South Australian teammate Jordan Buckingham.
Sai Sudharsan made a brisk 21 before becoming Doggett’s first wicket. At this point India A were 32-3, but Devdutt Padikkal (36) and Baba Indrajith held the fort, adding 39 for the fourth wicket.
However, India A fell apart once Todd Murphy – who had impressed on Australia’s 2022-23 tour of India – dismissed Indrajith, and lost six wickets for 15 runs to become 86-9. Nitish Kumar Reddy, also part of the Test squad, failed to score, while Ishan Kishan, back in the fold, made four.
No.9 Navdeep Saini then hit two fours and a six in his 23, adding 21 for the last wicket with Mukesh Kumar. Sai Sudharsan, Padikkal, and Saini were the only ones to reach double figures.
Mukesh then had Sam Konstas, the New South Wales teenage prodigy, caught behind with his third ball. Konstas is one of several candidates for the race to become Usman Khawaja’s opening partner in the upcoming series.
At the time of writing, Australia A were 4-1 with Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft – Konstas’ rivals in the same contest – at the crease.
