India seamer Jasprit Bumrah scaled new heights on Wednesday (January 1) with the latest update to the ICC's player rankings, becoming the highest-rated Indian bowler ever.
The latest rankings were released following the conclusion of three Boxing Day Test matches – Australia v India, South Africa v Pakistan and Zimbabwe v Afghanistan.
The most significant news came from the first one as Bumrah added three points to his bowling rating following a match haul of 9-156 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. His rating is now 907, the highest achieved by any Indian bowler and the joint-17th best of all time.
Bumrah and the recently retired Ravichandran Ashwin are the only two Indian bowlers to breach the 900-point barrier, Ashwin doing so in 2016. Among batters, Virat Kohli (937) and Sunil Gavaskar (916) have done so.
Three other Indian bowlers have achieved ratings of 850 or more in Test cricket – Ravindra Jadeja, Kapil Dev and all-rounder Vinoo Mankad. Understandably, the list is spinner-heavy with Bumrah and Kapil Dev the only ones to ever record a rating of over 800. Mohammed Shami is the next seamer on the list, having been rated at 790 in November 2019 – the tenth-highest among Indians.
Spinners Pragyan Ojha (773) and Harbhajan Singh (765) narrowly miss out on the top ten, with seamers Irfan Pathan (761), Javagal Srinath (757) and Zaheer Khan (752) rounding off the top fifteen.
After Bumrah and Jadeja, the next highest-rated bowler currently part of India's squad is Mohammed Siraj at 598 points, and a peak rating of 661 points.
