India have been set 275 runs to win in a maximum of 54 overs in the third Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Gabba. Here are some of the successful run-chases they may need to emulate in order to win.
The Gabba Test has been repeatedly interrupted by rain. It took over two days for the first innings of the match to be completed, as Australia were bowled out for 445 off the back of centuries from Steve Smith (101) and Travis Head (152).
India were then reduced to 44-4 and 74-5, before recovery efforts lower down the order helped them claw their way back. A 47-run partnership for the final wicket between Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep helped the visitors avoid the follow-on late on day four.

On day five, after taking the last wicket, Australia went searching for quick runs with more rain predicted. They made it to 89-7 before declaring, setting India 275 to win in a maximum of 54 overs.
India were 8-0 in 2.1 overs when the umpires took the players off for bad light, and tea was taken at the same time.
Fastest run-chases in Tests (min 100 runs): India set over five runs per over to win
Assuming no reduction in overs, the target of 275 runs means India are required to score at 5.09 runs per over. The fastest chase of over 100 runs in Test history came less than a month ago, when England scored at over eight runs an over against New Zealand in Christchurch. However, that was over just 12.4 overs.
England also hold the record for the fastest run rate over 50-plus overs in a successful run chase. In June 2022, they scored 299-5 in exactly 50 overs (5.98 RPO) against New Zealand in Nottingham.
India have never chased a target of more than 200 while scoring at more than five runs per over.
