Rohit’s reactions to Jaiswal’s drop

The commentators were not impressed by Rohit Sharma’s reaction after Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped Marnus Labuschagne on the fourth day of the fourth Test match.

Starting the fourth day of the Melbourne Test match on 358-9, India added 11 to their overnight score before Nitish Kumar Reddy was last man out, for 114. Leading by 105, Australia went to lunch at 53-2, and reached 80-2 not too long afterwards.

However, Mohammed Siraj had Steve Smith caught behind at this point, and Jasprit Bumrah ran through the middle order with a triple-wicket burst, leaving Australia reeling at 91-6.

With the score on 99, Akash Deep ran in to bowl at Marnus Labuschagne, with two slips and Yashasvi Jaiswal at a fourth-slip-cum-gully. The ball took Labuschagne’s bat and went to Jaiswal, who grassed an easy chance.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma expressed his frustration by punching the air. This did not sit well with the commentators.

“I don’t like that reaction from the Indian skipper,” said Michael Hussey. “I know he’s emotional and he desperately wants wickets but you’re the one that has to send the message of calm and support.

“No one means to drop a catch. He’ll feel bad enough as it is for putting a catch down, particularly someone like Marnus Labuschagne. It happens quickly – it’s in, it’s out. You don't need to see that as a young player.”

“You need him to walk out to open the batting alongside you as well,” added Alyssa Healy. “Make some runs to try and win a Test match for your country.” Rohit reclaimed the opening spot during the ongoing Test match.

Jaiswal has had a torrid time on the field. Early in the innings, he had dropped Usman Khawaja at leg gully off Bumrah: he was probably standing a tad too close to the batter. Just before tea, he stood up too quickly at silly mid-off, and dropped Labuschagne again, this time off Ravindra Jadeja.

At the time of writing, Australia were 144-6. They lead by 249 runs.
