Captains Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins addressed the media ahead of the first Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Friday. Here's what they said.
In recent years, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has become one of the most highly-anticipated Test series in the world. India have won the last four, including the last two on Australian soil. However, they come into this series on the back of a 3-0 home whitewash to New Zealand, their first home series loss in 12 years.
Regular captain Rohit Sharma will miss the first Test as he is still on paternity leave. Stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah attended the pre-match press conference on Sunday, alongside his Australian counterpart Pat Cummins.
Jasprit Bumrah: We are not carrying any baggage from the New Zealand series
On captaining India in Test cricket: "I don't look at captaincy as a post. I love responsibility. I love to do the tough job, since I was a child. You always want to be in the thick of things, to be thrown against tough scenarios. This adds a new challenge to me."
On managing fast bowling alongside captaincy: "I can manage myself the best when I am captain. Because I know when I am fresh, when I have to push myself, and I know when I have to take extra responsibility. You understand where the wicket is changing, what changes you have to make and what field sets are good at this moment."

On the playing XI for the first Test: "We have finalised our playing XI. You will come to know tomorrow, but we are sure on the combination we want to play."
On carrying any disappointment from the home whitewash: "Obviously we were disappointed and had a tough series last time, but we are not carrying any baggage. We come with a fresh mindset, different opposition, and you learn from the previous experience."
On the possibility of Nitish Kumar Reddy making a debut: "He is quite confident, quite talented, as you would have seen in the IPL as well. He has a lot of belief in his game. When you talk to any of the youngsters in our team, no one is confused or over-awed. It gives you confidence as a leader to see that youngsters want to take up the tough jobs. For me there is no more heartening sign than this."
Pat Cummins: Mitchell Marsh is feeling great, he's available to bowl
On coming up against some of India's less familiar players: "With most Test teams, especially India, you've got a lot of depth. Most of us have played IPL and seen how mnay newcomers step in and step up straight away. They're missing a couple of guys we're more familiar with, but some of them were in the Australia A series recently so it's good to have someone like Scotty Boland and Buddha [Nathan McSweeney] who can talk through some of those plans."

On Mitchell Marsh's fitness: "He'll definitely bowl in this Test, well, definitely available to bowl. With us four bowlers, we never budgeted an all-rounder bowling heaps, a few spells each innings or something like that. His body's great, best it's been for a while."
On the IPL auction overlapping with the Test: "Dan [Vettori, head coach] has obviously flown over there (to India), but he's been here for the whole prep, we've done all our meetings, done all our chats and obviously he'll be watching and keeping an eye on it. It's not a distraction as far as I can see it."
