Watch: Dinesh Chandimal, who scored a fine double hundred during the second Sri Lanka-Australia Test, launched a massive six outside the stadium during his knock, with the ball hitting a passer-by.

Walking in to bat at 186-3 with Sri Lanka still trailing by 178 runs in the first innings, Chandimal put on a memorable performance, scoring 206 off 326 balls. His innings, which helped the hosts post 554 after Australia made 364 in their first leg, was laced with 16 fours and five sixes, including two back-to-back maximums that helped him reach his double-ton.

Batting on 185 at the start of the 179th over, bowled by Mitchell Starc, Chandimal showed that he had no intention of slowing down as a landmark approached, pulling the first ball of the over for four. The next delivery had the batter, deep in his crease, clear his front leg before he clobbered the ball out of the stadium to move into the 190s.

The shot bounced near to a group of young boys walking outside the stadium, hitting one as it spun back up and into him. He passed on the ball to another member of his group, as commentator Russell Arnold suspected the ball would never be returned: “He’s going to take off with it.” However, the ball was returned back to the stadium with a strong fling and play continued, but not before the two Sri Lanka batters saw the amusement in the situation.

The very next ball by Chandimal was swatted over mid-wicket for another big six, bringing up his maiden Test double hundred. He added six more runs to his score and was the last batter dismissed from the side. Sri Lanka went on to win the game by an innings and 39 runs.
