Watch: Steve Smith saw his leg stump stump uprooted by an inducker from Mohammed Shami during the first Australia-India ODI at Mohali on Friday (September 22).
Shami, who dismissed Mitchell Marsh in the first over, returned to send back Smith in his second spell, dismissing the batter with a ball that moved sharply back in.
On the third delivery of the 22nd over, the ball moved in from the off-stump towards Smith. The Australia No.3 looked to drive but could only manage an inside edge onto the leg stump.
Smith departed for a 60-ball 41, after forging a 94-run stand with David Warner.
This was Smith’s first international match since the 2023 Ashes, after being sidelined from the recent tour of South Africa due to a wrist injury. He was to lead the Australia team in the ODI series in the absence of Pat Cummins, who too was suffering from a broken wrist but was replaced by Mitchell Marsh.
