Watch: Mohammed Shami nicked off Mitchell Marsh in the very first over of the first India-Australia ODI in Mohali to get his side off to a good start today (September 22).

India won the toss and chose to field in the first game of the three-match ODI series against Australia. Ravichandran Ashwin was named in India’s ODI XI for the first time in more than a year and a half, while Mohammed Siraj was rested for Shami.

Shami started proceedings with the ball for India, being given the first over before Jasprit Bumrah. The second ball of the match was ferociously cut behind point for four by Marsh. But Shami came back and had the last laugh two balls later.

The second slip had been taken out just before the fourth ball of the first over, while the first slip was moved slightly wider. Shami bowled a perfect outswinger on a good length on the off stump. Marsh was stuck on his crease and hanged his bat out only to get an outside edge that went straight to Shubman Gill at slip, who made no mistakes accepting the easy catch.

Bumrah then complemented Shami from the other end as the next three overs fetched no runs off the bat for Australia. Shami bowled four overs in his first spell before being replaced by Shardul Thakur in the ninth over, who almost had David Warner caught at mid-off.

Shami’s figures after his first spell read 1-16 as Australia finished their first 10 overs with a score of 42-1.
