England Australia ODIs

Down 0-2, England won two games to square the 2024 ODI series against Australia before losing the decider against Australia. Here are England’s marks out of 10 from the ODIs.

Harry Brook: 9/10
5 matches | 312 runs at 78.00, SR 128, HS: 110*, 1 hundred, 2 fifties

England Men’s 37th ODI captain began his stint at the helm in style. The hundred in the third match and the 87 in the fourth – both scored at rapid pace – helped England level the series after they were 0-2 down. He also blasted 72 in the fifth game, but it went in vain. He also seems ready to take over as captain.

Ben Duckett: 9/10
5 matches | 305 runs at 61.00, SR 110, HS: 107, 1 hundred, 2 fifties

England’s other outstanding batter of the series, Duckett had a hundred, a ninety, another fifty, and a cameo to provide England rapid starts in four games out of five. Despite having played only 11 ODIs before the series, he looked completely at ease against the world champions.

Liam Livingstone: 7.5/10
5 matches | 108 runs at 36.00, SR 167, HS: 62*, 1 fifty | 2 wickets at 61.00, ec 8.71, BBI: 1-24

A series of failures and failed starts for Livingstone, who had only one innings of note – the unbeaten 27-ball 62 in the fourth ODI that helped England amass 312-5. Gets half a point for the wickets of Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell.

Will Jacks: 6/10
5 matches | 156 runs at 31.20, SR 99, HS: 84, 2 fifties | 1 wicket at 88.00, ec 7.33, BBI: 1-20

Jacks began well, with two fifties at brisk pace in the first and third ODIs, but failed in the other two games.

Jacob Bethell: 5/10
5 matches | 85 runs at 28.33, SR 74, HS: 35 | 4 wickets at 21.50, ec 6.61, BBI: 2-33

Bethell had made waves even before his debut. None of his innings in this series was exactly memorable, but he was tidy with his left-arm spin.

Jamie Smith: 5/10
5 matches | 124 runs at 24.80, SR 93, HS: 49 | C: 6

After an impressive debut summer in Test cricket, Smith played three cameos in the ODIs including a violent 39 at Lord’s. He will probably have to make way once Jos Buttler returns, but his time will come.

Matthew Potts: 9/10
5 matches | 8 wickets at 24.75, ec 5.50, BBI: 4-38, 1 4WI

Potts played in all five games, and was at his best when he ran through Australia with 4-38 at Lord’s, England’s only four-wicket haul of the series. He also impressed at Chester-le-Street, conceding 48 in his nine overs on a surface where both sides scored at more than a run a ball.

Adil Rashid: 8/10
5 matches | 3 wickets at 61.00, ec 4.90, BBI: 2-42

Rashid continued to remain extremely difficult to score runs off in a series where he brought up his 200th wicket in the format. Across the two sides, only Aaron Hardie (4.87) had a better economy rate than Rashid’s 4.90. If the wickets column looks barren, it is because the Australians played him out.

Phil Salt: 3/10
5 matches | 96 runs at 19.20, SR 96, HS: 45

Salt’s series can be summed up by the fact that he had four double-digit scores but no fifty. These series are parts of the careers of high-risk batters.

Brydon Carse: 7/10
5 matches | 8 wickets at 30.50, ec 6.77, BBI: 3-36

A mixed series for Carse. He hit the deck consistently at serious pace, but his eight wickets came at a cost.

Olly Stone: 2/10
2 matches | 1 wicket at 82.00, ec 6.47, BBI: 1-46

In the two matches he played, Stone was ordinary at Headingley, and posed little threat at Bristol.

Jofra Archer: 5/10
3 matches | 4 wickets at 38.25, ec 6.65, BBI: 2-33

Three of Archer’s four wickets fell off excellent balls. The one that got Mitchell Marsh at Lord’s, in particular, may be talked about later. At the same time, he was taken for runs.
