England will have a new captain in Harry Brook when they take the field in the first ODI against Australia on September 19. Here’s the complete list of all the England ODI captains.
Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the England squad for the ODI series against Australia due to a calf injury, with Brook set to take over the reigns for the series. In the process, he will become England’s 37th ODI captain.
Before Brook, Zak Crawley was the last to get the prestigious role in a series against Ireland last year. Ray Illingworth was England’s first skipper in the format when they played Australia in their maiden ODI match in January 1971. However, their most successful period came under Ireland-born Eoin Morgan between 2014 and 2022.
Morgan was at the forefront of a remarkable turnaround for England after their 2015 ODI World Cup group-stage ouster following a demoralising defeat against Bangladesh. Under his captaincy, England overhauled their attitude to white-ball cricket, with the World Cup win in 2019 being the pinnacle moment.
Morgan has captained the side in most matches (126), winning 76. The next on the list – Alastair Cook – has captained in almost half the number of games (69).
