England captain Phil Salt during a nets session ahead of the first T20I against Australia on September 11

England have named their XI for the first T20I of their series against Australia, which will be held on September 11.

The first of the three T20Is will begin on Wednesday (September 11) at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton.

Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the series due to a right calf injury that he sustained ahead of The Hundred. Phil Salt has been named as captain in his place, with Jamie Overton replacing Buttler in the squad.

A day ahead of the game, England have named their XI, with three debutants featuring. Jordan Cox, who has made 2,598 runs in 123 T20 games has been slotted at No.3. Jacob Bethell and Overton are the others to make their debuts.

Salt will open the innings alongside Will Jacks, with Cox, Liam Livingstone and Bethell making up the rest of the middle-order.

Overton and Curran have been picked as the all-rounders, though it is likely the former will only feature as a pure batter as he continues to recover from a stress fracture in his back. Jofra Archer, Saqib Mahmood and Reece Topley are the fast bowlers, with Adil Rashid as the lone spinner. Mahmood will be playing his first T20I in over two years.

The England team will be coached by Marcus Trescothick, with the newly appointed white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum only taking on his white-ball duties from January 2025.

The second T20I against Australia will be played on September 13 in Cardiff with the last game two days later at Old Trafford.
