England white-ball captain Jos Buttler has been forced out of his side's upcoming T20Is series against Australia due to an injury.
Buttler has been out of action since the 2024 T20 World Cup after sustaining a right calf injury during the tournament. As a result, he missed The Hundred as well and pulled out of Lancashire's T20 Blast quarter-final against Sussex, raising doubts over his participation in the Australia T20Is.
Phil Salt named stand-in captain
The England Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that Buttler has been ruled out of the T20Is after failing to recover in time. Opener Phil Salt has been announced as the stand-in skipper.
Australia’s white-ball tour of England starts with a three-match T20I series on September 11 followed by as many ODIs, starting September 19. The injury also puts Buttler’s participation in the subsequent ODIs in doubt.
Overton named as Buttler's replacement
Surrey all-rounder Jamie Overton has been named as Buttler’s replacement. Overton was in line for a World Cup spot but a back stress fracture ruled him out of the competition.
Jordan Cox, part of the Test series against Sri Lanka has also been added as cover in the ODI squad. There are first senior England call-ups for Warwickshire and Birmingham Phoenix spin-bowling all-rounders Dan Mousley and Jacob Bethell in the T20I squad; Bethell, 20, is included in both the ODI and T20I groups.
