Jos Buttler smiles before England's T20 World Cup semi-final against India in 2024

England have included five uncapped players for their pair of home white-ball series against Australia this September.

There are first senior England call-ups for Warwickshire and Birmingham Phoenix spin-bowling all-rounders Dan Mousley and Jacob Bethell in the T20I squad; Bethell, 20, is included in both the ODI and T20I groups.

John Turner, Jordan Cox and Josh Hull have also been named in the T20 squad, all of whom are yet to make their international debut but have featured in senior England squads before. Hampshire seamer Turner was named in a pair of limited overs squads in 2023 without playing while Cox was on the 2022 T20I tour of Pakistan without getting on the park. Both Cox and Hull are currently with the England Test squad for the ongoing home series against Sri Lanka.

Aside from the uncapped players, there are several other eye-catching inclusions and omissions. Saqib Mahmood is in line to make his first England appearance in 18 months after starring in the Hundred final earlier this month, while Brydon Carse is straight back into the mix following his three-month ban from all cricket for historic betting offences.

Among the notable omissions are Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali, neither of whom are included in either squad. It is possible that both England veterans have played their last games for England. Elsewhere, Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran are both in the T20I squad but not the ODI group signalling a change in direction in the 50-over format.

Joe Root is not included in the ODI squad but his omission is due to workload management; he remains in the frame for next year's Champions Trophy.

Adil Rashid, 36, is in both squads while Jamie Smith and Matt Potts have both earned call-ups for the five-match ODI series. No player who has appeared in Test cricket for England this summer is in the T20I squad – the third Sri Lanka Test is scheduled to finish just one day before the first T20I against Australia.

England play Australia in three T20Is and five ODIs from September 11 to September 29. It will be England's first set of limited overs series since Matthew Mott's departure as head coach.
