Khawaja, the leading run-getter in the series so far, has faced 775 deliveries, twice as many as any batter from either side. On 58 at stumps, Khawaja threatened to build another big score – until Broad speared in a short one.

On 77, the bouncer had the desired effect: Khawaja’s half-hearted pull landed in the hands of substitute fielder Matt Potts, who took a comfortable catch at fine leg to give England their first wicket of the day.

It was the hosts who had been treated to a barrage of short balls earlier in the Test, playing a part in their collapse of six wickets for 47 runs in their first innings, which tilted the game towards Australia. On day four, England’s bowlers did the same: Khawaja’s wicket was closely followed by Steve Smith’s, bringing another twist to the intriguing game.
