England won the toss and elected to field, like they have in most home Tests under the captaincy of Ben Stokes.

There were question marks over David Warner’s place in the Australia side approaching the first Test, but he made it into the XI and immediately faced his arch-nemesis Stuart Broad. He started off with a bang as he hit the first ball of the match for a boundary.

While he safely negotiated Broad’s first spell of four overs, it was his partner Khawaja who got out defending to Broad. A full ball from round the wicket that pitched just outside off and jagged back in, beat Khawaja’s defence from the crease and struck him plumb in front.

Umpire Joel Wilson did not take much time to raise his finger. Khawaja, after some deliberation with Warner, went up to challenge the decision, but to no avail, as Hawkeye showed three reds and was sent packing for a score of just three.

This was Broad’s 599th Test wicket.
