England had struggled in the morning session, taking just the one wicket of Marnus Labuschagne while Australia slowed their scoring rate to a crawl. They scored 56 in 21 overs, with Khawaja finishing the session three short of a half-century having faced 152 balls.

Broad opened proceedings back up again after Lunch and bowled four dots before making the breakthrough. He sent down a full, straight and angled-in delivery to Khawaja, who missed it, trying to defend with a huge gap between bat and pad. The ball hit him on the knee roll of his front pad, drawing appeals from the England fielders.

Broad, as ever, didn’t bother with the appeal and ran down the pitch in celebration. He briefly turned around to check the decision to see Kumar Dharmasena raising his finger. Khawaja consulted with Steve Smith before opting to review the decision, only for ball tracking to show three reds.

That wicket was Broad’s 150th against Australia in Test matches, having passed 600 overall Test wickets last week at Old Trafford. He didn’t have to wait longer for his 151st, picking up Travis Head caught behind in his following over.
