England won the toss and chose to field, as has become the norm these days for them.

Ben Stokes said at the toss that he hoped England could get something out of the greenish-looking pitch on the first morning.

Broad answered his captain’s call as he got one to nip away from Warner from round the wicket to get him caught at second slip.

Warner had come into this game on the back of decent scores in the first two Test matches. His confidence was evident in the way he punched the first ball of the day, a full delivery on middle and leg, past mid-on for four.

Broad corrected his line and length on the next two deliveries. Warner let go of the second ball and defended the third, but had no answer to the fourth.

He pushed hard towards the off side and could only manage a thick outside edge that was taken sharply by Zak Crawley at second slip. This was the 16th time that Broad has dismissed him in Test matches, easily the most by any bowler.
