Labuschagne came into the match as the world’s No.1 ranked Test batter, but he struggled against Broad in particular, making a golden duck in the first innings before falling for one in the second.

First time round, it was the outswinger, a delivery Broad has rediscovered with Labuschagne and Steve Smith in mind, that did the damage. In the second, he required a more intricate set-up, angling the ball in towards the No.3’s pads before nipping the ball away and taking the outside-edge. Jonny Bairstow completed the catch.

Labuschagne now averages 37 with the bat outside of Australia, compared to more than 70 at home. He has just one century in 31 Test innings on the road.

The dismissal left the game evenly poised with Australia losing two quick wickets after a 61-run opening stand. They are chasing 281 to win, with the game having shifted to and fro throughout.
