Broad announced his retirement from professional cricket on the evening of day three, with England nine wickets down and leading Australia by over 350, but at several points over the next two days, it looked as if he would be denied the perfect ending.

A burst from Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes on the final evening brought England back into contention, but Alex Carey and Todd Murphy put together a ninth-wicket stand to have Australia dreaming of a comeback to outdo Edgbaston’s.

Broad then found his first moment of magic – literally – switching the bails before dismissing Murphy. Soon after, he wrapped up victory for England by 49 runs, nicking off Carey to spark wild celebrations.

He finishes 604 Test wickets at 27.68 and as England’s leading Ashes wicket-taker.
