Smith was given out by the on field umpire just before lunch, but reviewed the decision immediately. The ball from Broad had angled in and drew Smith across his stumps and forward into a defensive shot, and cut between his bat and pad en route. It sounded like it caught his inside edge on its way through.

As soon as Bairstow caught the ball, he threw his arms up in celebration as Broad celebrappealed down the pitch. Kumar Dharmasena raised his finger and Smith signalled to send the decision upstairs. As he walked down the pitch to talk to Travis Head, he shook his head to indicate he had not brushed the delivery.

But, as soon as the replays came up on the screen, it was clear Smith had indeed edged the ball. UltraEdge confirmed with a sizable spike as the ball passed the bat, nowhere near anything else that could have caused the noise.

As Smith walked off the pitch, he continued to look baffled as to how he could have nicked the ball and not felt it. He was out for 22 in his 100th Test match and left Australia at 85-4 late in the morning session.

It was another addition to England’s morning success after opting to bowl first, and Broad’s second wicket after he dismissed David Warner with the fourth ball of the match.
