England were four down after Lunch on day one having been put into bat by Pat Cummins. Stokes came to the crease after a counter-attacking innings from Moeen Ali alongside Harry Brook on a quick-fire half-century.

Stokes was only able to survive 16 balls, however, off which he picked up three singles, before Starc bowled him with a beauty. The ball pitched on middle stump to the left-handed Stokes, and swung away to peg back his off stump. Stokes had attempted to clip the delivery off his front pad but was undone by the swing. He let out a gasp in surprise as his stump lay flat on the floor behind him.

The wicket was Starc’s first of the day but was quickly followed by his second – Brook for 85. Stuart Broad gave him his third when he top-edged him straight up in the air to Travis Head at cover. Chris Woakes was the final wicket of the innings to fall, caught on the boundary to leave Starc with a four wicket haul.
