England’s newest Ashes cricketer had already made an impact on the first day of play in the second Test match, stunning Usman Khawaja with a beauty to take his first wicket just before lunch. Shortly after play resumed he also did for Warner with another brilliant delivery.
Warner faced Tongue’s second over after lunch and almost chopped on second ball, misjudging an awkward length delivery and getting a thick-edge past the stumps. He left the next ball but got lucky again off the fourth, which went straight through him and over the stumps down to the boundary.
With his next ball, however, Tongue hit his mark. He bowled a slightly fuller delivery which came back in off the seam to the left-hander. It cut straight through between Warner’s bat and pad as he looked to drive, crashing into his middle and leg stumps. The ball was up at 87 mph, demonstrating Tongue’s superior pace to the three other England seamers on display.
While Warner had looked increasingly uncomfortable at the crease, he had managed to get himself past fifty before falling to Tongue, his eighth in England in 16 matches. At the point of his dismissal, Australia were 96-2 having been put into bat by Ben Stokes.
