England were running away with proceedings on day two after taking five wickets in the morning session to wrap up the Australia innings in good time. All of England’s top three got starts, with Zak Crawley eventually falling stumped off Nathan Lyon for 48.
With England 182-1, things went bad to worse for Australia with their talismanic spinner Lyon hobbling off with what appeared to be a calf injury.
Soon after, Ollie Pope joined Crawley in falling in the forties, hooking a ball off Green to Steve Smith at deep fine leg. Australia continued with the short-ball ploy to new batter Joe Root and it very nearly brought another breakthrough after the former England captain gloved another bouncer his second ball at the crease through to Carey behind the stumps.
Root was walked back to the England dressing room when he was called back by the standing umpire Ahsan Raza called back the England batter after replays showed that Green had in fact overstepped. A precious second life for Root.
