The former England captain spilled a fairly routine chance at slip when Mitchell Marsh was on just 12. The Australia all-rounder sent the England attack to all parts in the afternoon session, registering his third Ashes hundred, doing so at a strike rate of just under 100. He scored more than 100 runs in the afternoon session alone.

Root let down another chance, this time off Alex Carey on four, at the start of the evening session. It was a routine catch with Carey cutting at a delivery off Chris Woakes – Root failed to cling onto the opportunity with the ball reaching him just over head height.

He had an opportunity to make amends the very next ball, with Travis Head offering him another chance. This time, Root held on to hand the impressive Woakes his third wicket of the day.

Upon completing the chance, Root let out a roar and threw the ball into the turf in frustration. The dismissal of Head opened the floodgates for England as two overs later Mark Wood dismissed both Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.
