Harry Brook fell in freakish fashion just as England were going nicely on day one in Birmingham to hand Australia the initiative on the opening day of the 2023 Ashes.

The England No. 5 came to the crease at the start of the second session after Zak Crawley fell on the stroke of lunch and quickly made an impression in his first Ashes contest.

He unfurled a flurry of eye-catching shots to race to 32 off 36 deliveries, putting on a 50-partnership with his Yorkshire teammate Joe Root.

Brook then fell in the most unlikely of circumstances to Lyon who picked up his second wicket of the day. Brook left a Lyon delivery at the last second, allowing the ball to cannon into his thigh. The ball than looped up into the air with Brook unaware of its location before it flicked the back of his leg and then spun into the stumps.

His dismissal brought England captain Ben Stokes to the middle but he soon joined Brook in the pavilion, edging Josh Hazlewood to Alex Carey behind the stumps.
