Chris Woakes and Mark Wood, a pair playing their first Tests of the 2023 Ashes, took England over the line on a nervy final day at Headingley to keep the series alive.

When Jonny Bairstow was bowled by Mitchell Starc, Woakes joined Harry Brook in the middle with 80 runs left to win and Australia favourites to go 3-0 up and retain the urn.

Brook and Woakes scored quickly and then looked set to take England over the line until Brook fell on 75, his highest score of the series, with England still 21 runs short.

Wood continued in a similar vein to how he batted in the first innings – when he hit 24 off eight – hooking Pat Cummins for six over fine leg off his second ball in the middle.

Woakes hit the winning runs, carving Mitchell Starc for four through the off side to give England their first win of the series and to maintain their hopes of winning the Ashes for the first time since 2015 and become the first side to win an Ashes series from 2-0 down since Australia in 1936/37.

The series now pauses for nine days before the action starts against at Old Trafford in Manchester.
