Ollie Pope, originally named in England’s squad for the third Test against Australia, has since been ruled out due to a shoulder injury he sustained during both of Australia’s innings in the second match, at Lord’s. In fact, the England vice-captain will miss the remainder of the series due to a dislocated shoulder that requires surgery.
England are yet to announce a replacement for Pope, but Daniel Lawrence is likely to be his replacement in the XI at Leeds, playing his first Test since March 2022.
Ben Foakes is a miss again, as the Surrey wicketkeeper continues to be overlooked, not playing a single game in the summer.
England will hope Moeen Ali to be fit in time for the third Test after they left him out of the second, to rest his injured finger. Moeen, who came out of retirement ahead of the series, cut his spinning finger while bowling in the first Test. England had added Rehan Ahmed to the squad for the Lord’s Test as cover, but have now left him out for Matty Potts.
The fast bowling options are James Anderson, Josh Tongue, Ollie Robinson and Stuart Broad, all of whom had played at Lord’s, along with Mark Wood and all-rounder Chris Woakes. England selected Tongue for the second Test after Wood declared himself unfit to play the game. England skipper Ben Stokes has hinted that Wood could be given a go at Leeds after an extra week of rest.
