The 73rd edition of the Ashes, Test cricket’s oldest contest, will begin on June 16 at Edgbaston. Australia regained the Ashes with a 4-0 win at home in 2016/17, and retain it till date, by virtue of a 2-2 draw in England in 2019 and another 4-0 home win in 2021/22.
At the same time, 2019 tour was the only time since 2001 Australia have returned from the English shores without losing a Test series: England won 2-1 in 2005, 2-1 in 2009, 3-0 in 2013, and 3-2 in 2015.
The five Test matches will be played at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Headingley, Old Trafford, and The Oval. Of England’s six traditional Test venues, Trent Bridge will miss out.
Before the Ashes, Australia will play India in the World Test Championship final, from June 7 at The Oval. England, on the other hand, beat Ireland by 10 wickets inside three days in a four-day Test match at Lord’s.
England will be led by Ben Stokes, who has now captained them in 11 wins in 13 Tests after they won one out of 18. James Anderson – who missed virtually all of the 2019 Ashes – and Ollie Robinson, who sat out of the Ireland Test match with minor injuries, are back as well.
Led by Pat Cummins, Australia have a full squad at their disposal. All eyes will be on Steve Smith, who made 774 runs in seven innings in 2019, and Marnus Labuschagne, who marked his arrival with 353 runs.
