Watch: A wide throw from Virat Kohli resulted in four extra runs for Sri Lanka during their record defeat against India in the 2023 Asia Cup final, without which the target would have been even lower for India.

At 12-6, Sri Lanka were down in the dumps. Mohammed Siraj had already become the joint-quickest bowler to grab a five-for in men’s ODI, in only 16 balls. The team slipped to 41-8 and were at risk of recording the second-lowest men’s ODI score by an ICC Full Member team if not for four overthrows by Kohli in the 14th over.

Dushan Hemantha played the delivery from Siraj towards fine leg, and the batters ran two. Kohli gathered the throw near the wicketkeeper’s end, and immediately threw the ball towards the other side. However, he was way off target, and the ball ran away to the boundary for four, as a total of six runs were scored off the delivery.

Kohli ended up conceding an additional four runs – eight per cent of the total – with the overthrow. He had also missed a low catch early in the innings.

Siraj ended with 6-21. India chased down the meagre target of 51 in 6.1 overs.
