Pakistan announced their playing XI on the eve of the match, making as many as five changes from their demoralising defeat against India. Fakhar Zaman, not in the original playing XI for the match against Sri Lanka, managed to find his way in after Imam-ul-Haq was ruled out with a back spasm.
Meanwhile, Fakhar’s original replacement, Mohammad Haris, stayed put, and Fakhar opened batting with Abdullah Shafique.

Coming on the back of a poor run so far in the Asia Cup, Fakhar would have hoped to make full use of this sudden opportunity, but Pramod Madushan had other plans.
Madushan had debuted in the 2022 Asia Cup, which was played in T20I format. He claimed 2-21 on maiden appearance, then 4-34 in the final, both against Pakistan. He had bowled Fakhar in the final.
Here, he found appreciable shape with the new ball, and landed a perfect yorker off the second ball of the fifth over. The inswing to the left-hander from over the wicket meant Fakhar could not get bat to ball and was castled through the gate, and Sri Lanka drew first blood.
Earlier, a delay of more than two hours due to rain meant the match had to be reduced to a 45 overs a side. Pakistan were 130-5 in 27.4 overs when rain interrupted play, though the match may resume.
