Five teams, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan gained direct entry into the competition, while Hong Kong, Kuwait, the UAE and Singapore battled in the qualifiers for the sixth spot. Hong Kong made the cut after ending on top of the points table, winning all three games.
The Asia Cup began with Afghanistan beating Sri Lanka convincingly in a low-scoring game. They became the first time to qualify for the Super Four after defeating Bangladesh in their second clash, winning by seven wickets. India joined them a night later, winning a thriller against Pakistan and beating Hong Kong easily.
This year’s Asia Cup is being played in the T20 format to prepare teams for the 20-over World Cup, which will be held later this year in October in Australia. The only other time the event was played in the shortest format was in 2016 when the Asia Cup was held a few weeks before the T20 World Cup.
The Asia Cup will be held in two venues: the Dubai International Cricket Stadium and the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The final will be played in Dubai on September 11. The last match of the group stage will be played on September 2, between Pakistan and Hong Kong.
The Super Four will begin a day later, with each side playing the other team once. The top two sides in the Super Four will qualify for the final.
