Andle Phehlukwayo was run out in comical fashion agaisnt Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Watch: South Africa's Andile Phehlukwayo was run out in comical fashion against Afghanistan, leaving his crease while the ball was in the slip fielder's hands.

In the first ODI of the bilateral series between the sides in Sharjah, South Africa captain Aiden Markram won the toss and chose to bat first, but soon watched as his side crumbled.

Reeza Hendricks was the first wicket to fall, inside-edging Fazalhaq Farooqi onto the stumps before Markram himself went in identical fashion. Farooqi took a third wicket when Tony de Zorzi misjudged a pull shot to hole out at mid-on. Youngster Allah Ghazanfar then accounted for Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne and Jason Smith to bring Andile Phehlukwayo to the crease at 36-6.

The left-hander kept out three deliveries, before he was struck on the pad by Ghazanfar, off the final ball of the batting powerplay. The bowler, as well as keeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz went up in appeal for lbw.

Phehlukwayo, completely unaware that the ball had trickled straight to the fielder at slip, Gulbadin Naib, set out from his crease in pursuit of a run. He was sent back by Wiaan Mulder within a couple of steps, but it was too late by then. Gulbadin had already thrown the stumps down, catching Phehlukwayo short of his ground.

The wicket left the Proteas 36-7, and at the time of writing they had recovered somewhat to 75-8.
